Connection refused errors

Last updated: December 2024

Getting "Connection refused," "Connection timed out," or "Can't connect to server"? Here's how to fix it.

Check the basics first

  1. 1. Is the server online? Check the dashboard—status should show green/Online
  2. 2. Correct address? Copy the IP:Port directly from the dashboard
  3. 3. Correct port? Don't forget the port number after the colon

Common causes and fixes

Server is still starting

Even if the status shows "Online," the game may still be loading. Wait 1-2 minutes after starting, especially with mods. Check the console—you'll see "Done" or "Server started" when it's ready to accept connections.

Wrong game version

Your game client must match the server version exactly:

  • - Check your server version in the Startup tab
  • - Update your game client to match, or change the server version
  • - For Minecraft, you can use version switchers in most launchers

Whitelist enabled

If the server has whitelisting enabled and you're not on the list:

  • - Ask the server owner to add you to the whitelist
  • - Or disable whitelist with whitelist off in console

Missing mods on client

If the server uses mods, you might need the same mods installed on your computer:

  • - Ask the server owner which mods are required
  • - Install matching mod versions locally
  • - Use the same modloader (Forge/Fabric) as the server

Your firewall or antivirus

Sometimes local security software blocks game connections:

  • - Temporarily disable your firewall/antivirus and try again
  • - Add the game to your firewall's allowed list
  • - Check if your VPN is interfering (try disabling it)

ISP or network blocks

Some networks (schools, offices, hotels) block gaming ports:

  • - Try connecting from a different network (mobile hotspot)
  • - Use a VPN to bypass network restrictions
  • - Contact your network administrator

Server is full

If the server has reached its player limit, new connections will be refused. Check the current player count in your game's server browser or ask the owner to increase the max players.

Game-specific issues

Minecraft

  • - "Invalid session": Restart Minecraft and re-login
  • - "Outdated server/client": Version mismatch—update to match

Rust

  • - Verify game files through Steam
  • - Clear EAC cache if getting Easy Anti-Cheat errors

Valheim

  • - Make sure you're using the same password as the server
  • - Try connecting via Steam's server browser instead of direct IP

Test with another device

If possible, try connecting from a different computer or ask a friend to try. This helps determine if the issue is with your setup or the server.
