Inviting friends to play

Last updated: December 2024

Once your server is running, you'll want to invite friends to join. Here's how to share your server and optionally restrict access to only people you trust.

Sharing your server address

The simplest way to invite friends is to share your server's connection details:

  1. 1. Open your server in the dashboard
  2. 2. Find the IP Address at the top of the panel (e.g., play.realm.fun:25565)
  3. 3. Click the copy button next to the address
  4. 4. Send it to your friends via Discord, text, or any messaging app

Your friends can then paste this address into their game's multiplayer menu to connect.

Setting up a whitelist (Minecraft)

If you want to restrict your server to only approved players, enable whitelisting:

  1. 1. Go to your server's Console tab
  2. 2. Type whitelist on and press Enter
  3. 3. Add each friend with whitelist add PlayerName

Now only whitelisted players can join. To remove someone, use whitelist remove PlayerName.

Password protection (Rust, Valheim, etc.)

Many games support server passwords instead of whitelists:

  1. 1. Go to your server's Startup tab
  2. 2. Find the Server Password field
  3. 3. Enter your desired password
  4. 4. Restart your server for changes to take effect

Share both the server address and password with your friends. They'll need to enter the password when connecting.

Making a friend an operator/admin

Want to give a trusted friend admin powers? Here's how for common games:

Minecraft

In the console, type: op PlayerName

Rust

In the console, type: ownerid SteamID64 "PlayerName"

Valheim

Add their Steam ID to the adminlist.txt file in your server's Files tab.

Security tip

Only give admin/operator permissions to people you fully trust. Admins can modify the server, ban players, and access commands that could disrupt your game.

Troubleshooting friend connections

If friends can't connect:

  • - Make sure your server is online (check the status indicator)
  • - Verify they're using the correct IP and port
  • - Check if whitelist is enabled and they're added
  • - Ensure they have the same game version as your server
  • - If using mods, confirm they have matching mods installed
