Server won't start

Last updated: December 2024

If your server won't start or gets stuck in "Starting" status, here are the most common causes and fixes.

Quick fixes to try first

  1. 1. Wait a moment: Some games take 1-2 minutes to fully start, especially with mods
  2. 2. Try restart: Click Stop, wait 30 seconds, then Start again
  3. 3. Check console: Look for error messages (red text) that explain the issue

Common causes and solutions

Corrupted configuration file

If you recently edited a config file and now the server won't start:

  1. 1. Check the console for "Error loading" or "Parse error" messages
  2. 2. Open the config file in the Files tab
  3. 3. Look for syntax errors (missing quotes, brackets, or colons)
  4. 4. Fix the error or restore from backup

Broken mod or plugin

If you recently installed a mod and the server stopped working:

  1. 1. Look for the mod name in console error messages
  2. 2. Remove or disable the problematic mod via the Files tab
  3. 3. Try starting again
  4. 4. Check if the mod is compatible with your server version

Out of disk space

Servers need free space to run. Check your disk usage in the dashboard:

  • - Delete old backups you don't need
  • - Remove unused mods or map files
  • - Clear old log files from the logs folder

Corrupted world/map

If your world data became corrupted:

  1. 1. Look for "World" or "Level" errors in the console
  2. 2. Restore from your most recent backup
  3. 3. If no backup is available, you may need to reset the world

Missing Java (Minecraft)

If you see Java-related errors:

  1. 1. Go to the Startup tab
  2. 2. Check the Java version setting
  3. 3. Select the correct version for your Minecraft version (Java 17 for 1.17+, Java 21 for 1.20.5+)

EULA not accepted (Minecraft)

If you see "You need to agree to the EULA":

  1. 1. Open the eula.txt file in the Files tab
  2. 2. Change eula=false to eula=true
  3. 3. Save and start the server

Reading error messages

The console usually tells you what's wrong. Look for:

  • - [ERROR] or [FATAL] - Critical issues that prevent startup
  • - Exception - A crash with details about what went wrong
  • - File names - Often indicates which config or mod is broken

Nuclear option: Reinstall

If nothing else works:

  1. 1. Download a backup of your world/save data
  2. 2. Go to Settings and click Reinstall Server
  3. 3. This resets all files to a fresh install
  4. 4. Re-upload your world data
  5. 5. Reinstall mods one at a time to identify what was causing the issue
